About the artwork

Made with Posca pencils and spray paint, this drawing on paper is composed in the manner of a tag. Several characters are represented in the form of personified cats from the world of comics and cartoons. While the artist's name appears several times on the work, the title Since 1996 also appears in the lower right-hand corner. The colors are sometimes bright, sometimes cold. The expression of the figures tends towards a certain gloom, yet the liveliness of the colors adds nuance. Voluntarily apolitical, Chanoir prefers to arouse aesthetic emotion rather than denounce societal facts, as is generally the case with other urban artists.

Expert opinion

Thanks to his many collaborations and his instantly recognizable cats, Chanoir is undoubtedly one of the leading artists on the urban scene.

About the artist

Born in Bogota in 1976, Chanoir, whose real name is Alberto Vejarano, is a French-Colombian urban artist and designer who lives and works mainly in Paris. He graduated from the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2002, and went on to found the Collectif 1980, bringing together artists such as Alexandre Sirvin, Jean-Philippe Illanes, Hugo Garcia and Ernest Añaños Montoto. Chanoir's art is apolitical, graphic and expressive. Ailurophile, his productions are essentially representations of cats. His name, Chanoir, itself stems from this associated passion, with a reference to Théophile Alexandre Steinlen's famous cabaret poster Le Chat Noir. Several of his works can be found in the permanent collection of Bogotá's Museum of Modern Art (MAMBO). In 2009, he took part in the "Né dans la rue" exhibition at the Fondation Cartier, where he presented several works. He also collaborates with numerous brands such as Cacharel in 2011 and Samsung in 2012, as well as with department stores such as Galeries Lafayette in 2013.
