About the artwork
Seeing White Through (2012) is an iconic work by JonOne, produced in mixed media on canvas and presented in a black American crate frame. The composition explodes in a profusion of bright colors, dominated by reds, oranges and pinks, crossed by white splashes that structure the pictorial space. The gesture is rapid, instinctive, almost performative, recalling the artist's graffiti origins while asserting full control over the canvas surface. Behind the apparent spontaneity, the work reveals a subtle balance between chaos and construction, where each spray of paint contributes to a dense, immersive visual rhythm. Dated, titled and signed on the back, this piece asserts a strong, immediate presence, typical of JonOne's energetic abstract language.
Expert opinion
This work is an excellent example of JonOne's pictorial maturity in the early 2010s, a period during which his abstract vocabulary reached great visual intensity. The generous format, masterful use of color and presence of white as a structuring element reinforce the composition's legibility and strength. The signature, title and date on the back, as well as the certificate of authenticity, ensure complete traceability and reinforce the interest of this piece on the market. Seeing White Through will appeal both to collectors sensitive to the heritage of graffiti and to those seeking energetic, immediately identifiable contemporary abstraction.
About the artist
Dominican-born John Andrew Parello alias JonOne was born in New York in 1963. A child of Harlem, he cut his teeth bombing the trains and walls of his neighborhood from the age of seventeen. Quickly and completely self-taught, he made the transition from urban medium to canvas, creating paintings influenced by his own life: hip hop, the street and the subway, reproducing the vision of a graffitied train and its drips. JonOne's practice is characterized by "freestyle", a watchword that imposes no limits, making each of his canvases the result of an abstract improvisation. His first solo exhibition, entitled "Graffitism", took place in 1990 at Galerie Gleditsch 45 in Berlin, Germany. This was followed by group and solo exhibitions all over the world (Tokyo, Monaco, Paris, Geneva, New York, Hong Kong, Brussels...), making JonOne a major artist on the contemporary urban scene.
