About the artwork

Created in 2007, “Rubik Scream II” is part of Invader’s iconic series that reimagines cultural icons through his “Rubikcubism” technique. Drawing inspiration from the visual structure of the famous Rubik’s Cube, the artist creates a pixelated image in vibrant colors, depicting here the expressive silhouette of Edvard Munch’s famous “The Scream.” The work is printed on thick paper, with a sharp rendering of the multiple colored modules, perfectly reproducing the artist’s characteristic visual pattern. Limited to just 15 copies, this is a particularly rare edition in Invader’s body of work.

Expert opinion

“Rubik Scream II” is a highly sought-after piece from Invader’s body of work, as it belongs to one of the most significant periods in his artistic evolution: the consolidation of “Rubikcubism,” an approach that allowed him to move beyond the public sphere and fully establish himself in the realm of contemporary art. Its very limited edition (15 copies) makes the work remarkably rare, especially since it features an iconic subject associated with one of the most recognizable motifs in the Rubik series. The 50.80 × 40.60 cm format, more intimate than the large canvases depicting cubes, nevertheless retains all the visual power of the pixelated motif. The work as a whole demonstrates Invader’s humor, precision, and ability to reinterpret classic works in a resolutely contemporary language. This piece is a powerful and highly representative example of his artistic universe.

About the artist

Invader (b. 1969, France) is a leading figure in urban art. He is famous for his Space Invader-inspired mosaics, installed on the walls of over 80 cities worldwide. His work, both discreet and omnipresent, questions visual invasion, collective memory and urban cartography. His visual language, based on the pixel as a basic unit, evokes geek culture, street art and the decorative arts. He also creates limited-edition works, such as this silkscreen, which translate his universe into more intimate formats.
