About the artwork
This blue-and-green lithograph of a man watching a swimmer takes its subject from David Hockney's famous 'Portrait of An Artist (Pool with Two Figures)'. Giving it exactly the same title, Madsaki makes no secret of his inspirations, and interprets them with his own style: fine lines, wavy lines, a "smiley" smile.
About the artist
Born in 1974 in Osaka (Japan), Masaki grew up in New Jersey (USA) and graduated from New York's Parsons School of Design in 1996. The artist's dual nationality shapes the aesthetics of his artistic work, while drawing inspiration from references that have marked the history of art. He develops his own style with aerosol paint, using humor to hijack the subjects he paints. First exhibited in the United States (Brooklyn, 2001; New-York, 2003; Boston, 2003), his works have toured the world between France (Halle Saint-Pierre, Paris, 2003; Perrotin Matignon, Paris, 2020; FRAC Grand Large, Dunkerque, 2023), the USA (ASF Gallery, San Francisco, 2008 ; Perrotin, New York, 2021), Korea (Perrotin, Seoul, 2020), China (Takashi Murakami solo show, Tai Kwun Contemporary, Hong Kong, 2019) and Japan (Clear Gallery, Tokyo, 2009; Kaikai Kiki Gallery, Tokyo, 2023) for group and solo shows.
