About the artist

George Condo (b. 1957, Concord, New Hampshire) is an American contemporary artist renowned for his psychologically charged and often grotesque approach to figurative painting. Drawing on European Old Masters, Cubism, Surrealism, and popular culture, he combines art-historical references with a highly distinctive visual language. Emerging from New York’s art scene in the early 1980s, alongside figures such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, Condo developed what he calls “Artificial Realism”, the realistic representation of an artificial or invented world. His portraits frequently feature fragmented faces, exaggerated features, and conflicting emotional expressions, exploring the complexity of human identity and psychology. Today, Condo is regarded as a major figure in contemporary painting. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in prominent museum collections, including MoMA and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Tate in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
