About the artwork
This work depicts a portrait of a woman whose hair is represented by balls of thread glued to the support. The color palette is composed of pinks and reds. The portrait is quite naive in style, but very expressive. The figure seems to be observing something with a certain trepidation. In her works, Astoupé transfigures her youth spent in war-torn African countries, to produce portraits that bear witness to an unusual and profound trial of life.
Expert opinion
This work is typical of Atsoupé's bust portraits.
About the artist
Born in Togo in 1986, Atsoupé lives and works in Paris. A graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2011, her work is characterized by portraits, mainly of women, with intense, enigmatic gazes. She draws her inspiration from her immediate surroundings, giving her art an intimate, introspective dimension. Her works sometimes evoke the simplicity of art brut, favoring an authentic, spontaneous approach. Atsoupé has taken part in several exhibitions, notably at Galerie Anne de Villepoix and Galerie Malebranche in Paris.
