About the artwork

This work bears witness to the influence of Japan on artist Bryce Delplanque's imagination, with its gold background and full-height plant motif. Like the artist's other creations, the materials used allow for a play of textures and visual effects that contribute to the seductive, poetic character of the work. The title refers to the history of art and to Fantin Latour, a 19th-century master of floral painting and group portraiture. The rich detail of the white petals, with shadow effects giving relief to the branches, achieves great realism. The precise, crisp drawing contrasts with the unreal character of the golden background, which is more expressive and free. In the title, Bryce Delplanque evokes the legacy of Fantin Latour, while drawing inspiration from Japan in the execution.

Expert opinion

Artist Bryce Delplanque makes his mark with this delicate, refined approach to depicting nature. The work recalls the world of Nabis prints and screens, but with a more contemporary approach.
