About the artwork
Thanks to an approach combining art and science, the visionary OBVIOUS collective, in collaboration with SHOE, presents a new abstract work created using artificial intelligence and style-transfer algorithms. The work gives the impression of perpetual movement, metamorphosing before the eye of its audience. The algorithm has created a vibrant surface of intertwining waves and shapes, with a hypnotic quality that matches SHOE's calligraphic aesthetic. Generated by AI, the print is numbered and signed by the OBVIOUS trio in their distinctive signature: a mathematical formula.
Expert opinion
This work is distinguished above all by its experimental technique, while at the same time exuding an undeniable aesthetic power. The vibrant colors and arrangement of forms offer a fresh perspective on the pictorial approach, combined with technology. This encounter between technological innovation and artistic expression pushes back the boundaries of contemporary creation.
About the artist
Obvious is a French collective made up of three friends, Pierre Fautrel, Hugo Caselles-Dupré and Gauthier Vernier, all born in 1993. Artists and researchers, they use artificial intelligence, and more specifically GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) algorithms, to create their works. Their creations are signed with the algorithmic formula that generated them. Pioneers of digital art, they were the first French artists to create NFTs, back in 2018, with the work "Eryn Nemesis". Their works are exhibited worldwide, including at the National Museum of China in Beijing (2019), Haus der Kunst in Munich (2020), and Galerie Danysz in Paris (2022). They gained notoriety with the sale of their painting "Edmond de Belamy" at Christie's New York in 2018 for over $400,000. Niels Shoe Meulman aka SHOE born in 1967 is an artist renowned for his gestural paintings from the world of graffiti and street art. He revolutionized the art of writing by launching the Calligraffiti movement, asserting that "the word is image and the written word is painting".
“Computers are useless, they can only provide answers. Well, Picasso, we disagree.”
