About the artwork

This painting features a pair of gilded andirons, depicted with striking realism, placed at an angle within the composition. Here, the artist introduces a change of scale by monumentalizing these andirons. The pictorial treatment offers a new perspective on these usually invisible objects. Bryce Delplanque's pictorial treatment adopts a minimalist style, obliterating anything that might distract attention from the subject. The result is a play on the viewer's perception, who sees the object from a new angle. The meticulous attention to detail, the rendering of golden reflections and metallic texture, lends these objects a sculptural quality. By detaching these objects from their primary function - utilitarian fireplace accessories - the artist elevates them to the status of art objects in their own right, while disrupting the traditional distinction between art and commerce.

Expert opinion

This work is singular in both its highly realistic pictorial treatment and its bold choice of subject. Bryce Delplanque underlines the tension between authenticity and reproducibility, between art and design, while confronting the viewer with his or her own perception of the art object.
