About the artwork

This work is part of Silvie Brière's Origins du Monde series. It consists of a pencil drawing onto which the artist pastes documents, usually taken from magazines. The drawing is based on the body of Gustave Courbet's famous 1866 painting, L'Origine du Monde. Silvie Brière reappropriates this body as a female artist, affixing all manner of images that evoke pleasures, prohibitions, fantasies and scars. Here, the lower abdomen of this female body is covered with a pink drape, from which a foot is swallowed up by this mass of powdered fabric.

Expert opinion

This work is part of a large series which, through its multiplicity and diversity, paints a comprehensive portrait of the condition of women. The combination of drawing and collage makes for a particularly interesting work. Silvie Brière's artistic practice is highly diversified. Painting, collage, drawing and sculpture are all mediums in which she explores intimacy and femininity. Her sometimes disturbing universe and her taste for series confront the viewer with his or her own human reflection.

About the artist

Born into a family of master glassmakers, Silvie Brière joined the painting department of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1982. After devoting herself to decorative painting and stained glass, she diversified her practice, engaging in a dialogue with the female body through a variety of media. In 2005, she began a series of collages entitled L'Origine du Monde, in reference to Gustave Courbet's famous painting. Through this series, and in a game of concealment/revelation, she subtly shows the inner world of women and their condition. Silvie Brière has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, notably in Paris for the Private Choice off fair.
