About the artwork

This work features a standard Orangina glass bottle, approximately 16 cm in height and 8 cm in diameter,hand-painted with the artist's iconic "Mr. A" character. The character, rendered in black paint, displays its characteristic round head,a prominent smile, and an eye denoted by a circle with a cross. The bottle contains a light brown liquid, consistent with the appearance of Orangina soda. The artwork is positioned on a colorful surface, possibly a box or book, which also features an image of an Orangina bottle with a "Mr. A" character on its label, alongside text elements such as "ORANGINA" and "STAY ALIVE." The piece is a product of a collaboration between the artist and the Orangina brand, specifically released in conjunction with the French retail concept store Colette. Such collaborations are characteristic of the artist's practice, where he integrates his street art iconography into commercial products and design objects. The presence of the "Mr. A" character transforms an everyday consumer item into an art object, reflecting the artist's engagement with popular culture and his ability to extend his artistic identity beyond traditional gallery spaces. The design on the bottle is consistent with his established visual language.

Expert opinion

André Saraiva's position within the art historical context is primarily as a figure who bridged the gap between graffiti and contemporary art. His consistent use of the "Mr. A" character across various platforms, from street walls to luxury collaborations, demonstrates a strategic approach to branding and artistic dissemination. The market for his works reflects this broad appeal, with collectible items from his collaborations often appearing alongside more traditional art forms like paintings and sculptures. His objects command prices that reflect both his artistic recognition and the collectibility of limited-edition design pieces.

About the artist

Born in 1971. Lives and works in Paris. French artist and entrepreneur André Saraiva is one of the pioneers of urban art. Discovering graffiti in 1989, he invented his famous Mr. A character, which became a veritable visual identity and made him famous. At a frenetic pace of around 20 tags a night, almost 150,000 Mr. A's have been drawn on all kinds of surfaces since the start of his career. It's a veritable invasion of the world by this cheerful, debonair little character, whose bulbous face is often topped by a top hat, and whose eyes - one round, the other covered by a cross - seem to wink at you. Perched on long, straight legs, Mr. A resembles his inventor: smiling, charming and mischievous. André goes beyond graffiti to share his vision of the contemporary world. In 2004, he was exhibited at the Parco Museum in Tokyo, and in 2006 took part in the "La Force de l'Art" exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris. In 2009, he took part in the "Vraoum" exhibition at the Maison Rouge in Paris. In 2014, he exhibited at the Frieder Burda Museum in Baden-Baden, Germany, and a retrospective was organized at the Museu do Design e da Moda in Lisbon. His work has been exhibited in museums and contemporary art galleries worldwide.
