About the artwork

A central pair of eyes emerges from a composition dominated by floral and entomological motifs, rendered predominantly in shades of blue and pink with accents of orange and gold. The eyes are positioned centrally, surrounded by an abundance of roses, hydrangeas, and other botanical forms that appear to cascade around them. A skull is partially visible within the upper left quadrant of the floral arrangement, integrated into the blue tones. Butterflies, including species resembling Monarchs, and various moths are interspersed throughout the floral elements, some depicted realistically with detailed wing patterns, while others are rendered in metallic gold. Geometric patterns, possibly suggestive of sacred geometry, are subtly integrated into the background around the eyes. The lower portion of the canvas features vertical washes of light blue and white, providing a contrasting, ethereal backdrop to the more detailed upper section. The overall impression is one of a veiled or obscured figure, with the eyes serving as a focal point amidst the organic and symbolic imagery.

Expert opinion

This work aligns with contemporary figurative art that incorporates elements of surrealism and symbolism, often drawing from natural imagery to explore internal states or philosophical concepts. Gemma Compton's practice positions her within a current trend of artists who blend detailed naturalistic rendering with allegorical content. Her engagement with themes of mortality, beauty, and introspection, framed within her 'Memento Mori' series, resonates with historical artistic traditions while employing a modern aesthetic. The recurring motifs of flora, fauna, and human elements contribute to a recognizable visual language that has found a market among collectors interested in accessible yet symbolically rich contemporary painting.

About the artist

Gemma Compton is a contemporary artist based in Bristol, UK, who earned a First-Class (Hons) degree in fashion design from UWE in 2008. Her background in print design and illustration is evident in her artistic output. Compton's work often explores themes of human emotion within the natural world, incorporating symbolism from flora and fauna. Her artistic practice developed significantly following a serious car crash in 2001, which resulted in a spinal injury and a period of recovery. This experience led her to focus on art as a means of expression and processing, influencing her exploration of strength, fragility, and the transience of life. She describes her paintings as representing "distorted memories, dreams, and fears," and refers to her body of work as a 'Memento Mori' series. Compton has exhibited her works internationally, including gallery shows, fashion apparel collaborations, and large-scale murals. She has also collaborated with her husband, artist Copyright, on various projects.
