About the artwork

This felt-tip drawing shows a naked, muscular man in a doorway. Francis Savel's use of reserve implies the extremities of the body, concealing the head, ankles and feet. This meticulous work is reminiscent of the academies that every artist is confronted with during his or her training, in order to master the proportions and subtleties of the human body.

Expert opinion

This drawing by Francis Savel is interesting in more ways than one. The frontal nature of the nude body contrasts with the concealment of the figure's identity, whose face is masked. The figure is reduced to a muscular frame and a date - the date of the work's creation. With its great physicality, this felt-tip drawing is a fine academic work by this twentieth-century artist.

About the artist

French painter, musician and set designer Francis Savel is one of those 20th-century artists who express their art through a diversity of fields. Established in an artistic community, he made a film in 1978 with filmmaker Guy Gilles (Equation à un Inconnu) and collaborated with director Joseph Losey on Monsieur Klein (1976) and Don Giovanni (1979). He is best known for his still-lifes in oil, whose craftsmanship amazes the viewer.
