About the artwork
This photograph is a double portrait of Italian actress Monica Bellucci and Canadian model Yasmeen Ghauri. The two women embrace tenderly as we watch them. Icons of beauty and desirability, Richard Aujard manages to capture their fragility. This photograph was taken in 1991 for the American magazine Esquire. Although Richard Aujard began his career as a reporter after working as a fashion photographer for Vogue, he has continued to photograph artists and stars the world over.
Expert opinion
This is one of Richard Aujard's most famous photographs, and a manifesto of his practice. With its blend of strength and vulnerability, this is one of the finest portraits of his career.
About the artist
French photographer born 1965, died 2021. With a passion for images, Richard Aujard joined the Vogue studio in Paris at the tender age of 19. He soon began shooting fashion photos for the famous magazine. He then left the French capital for Australia and the United States, where he began a career as a photojournalist. He photographed Bikers, American Indian tribesmen, followed French soldiers, reported on the devastation of the Haiti earthquake, photographed the slums of Mongolia and became fascinated by boxers. He delivers a gallery of portraits, like that of the famous Mike Tyson, from whom emanate both physical strength and mental power. The choice of black and white, a contrasting two-tone style, allows him to evoke the weaknesses and cracks of all the invincible figures he comes across. Alongside his reportage work, Richard Aujard photographs artists such as Jean-Paul Belmondo, Béatrice Dalle, Woody Allen and Monica Bellucci. His photographs are regularly published in Paris Match, Vanity Fair, Les Inrocks and GQ. The photographer has also directed two short films, which have been selected for numerous festivals.
“Sophistication makes me uncomfortable; I like both the strength and the cracks in people.”
