About the artwork
In Maze Lucid, James Jean deploys a graphic virtuosity in which figurative forms dissolve into arabesques. The image oscillates between seduction and enigma, constructing a dreamlike universe of baroque richness.
Expert opinion
Jean's virtuoso strokes map out a dreamlike logic in which figuration dissolves into lace. The image is both seductive and enigmatic.
About the artist
Born in 1979 in Taiwan, James Jean is an artist living and working in the United States. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he honed his unique style blending surrealism, illustration and pop culture, James Jean first gained notoriety as a comic book cover illustrator, notably for DC Comics and Vertigo.
He is renowned for his visually rich works, characterized by fluid compositions, semi-abstract figures and subtle use of color and light. Over the years, James Jean has expanded his work to include paintings, sculptures and installations. His works often fuse elements of mythology, popular culture and surrealism, creating a unique, dreamlike visual universe also influenced by neo-pop currents, notably Japanese ones such as Superflat, launched by Murakami. James Jean has collaborated with major brands and artists, and his work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide.
