About the artwork
This work is a portrait on which abstract, geometric motifs are superimposed with colored thread. Maurizio Anzeri employs his distinctive technique of using old phtogrpahies, often in black and white, which he transofmises with coloured thread embroidery, creating a tension between past and present, identity and metamorphosis.the effect is both fascinating and unsettling: the embroidered threads partially mask the character's expression, while at the same time conferring a new presence. This work on anonymity and transformation evokes themes such as memory, heritage and the reconstruction of identity.
Expert opinion
This work is a perfect example of Maurizio Anzeri's approach, in which he hijacks old photographs and questions our relationship to image and identity.
About the artist
Born in Italy in 1969, Maurizio Anzeri is a contemporary artist based in London. He is best known for his "photo-sculptures", in which he fuses photography and embroidery. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, his work explores the relationship between portraiture and abstraction, between the familiar and the strange. His creations are often described as a form of emotional archaeology, bringing forgotten images back to life through textile interventions. Her work is exhibited in numerous galleries and collections around the world, including the Saatchi Gallery in London and the Houston Center for Photography.
