LOVE

Robert Indiana was an American artist associated with the Pop Art movement. Born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana, he later adopted the name of his home state. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and the Edinburgh College of Art before moving to New York in the mid-1950s. His early career involved creating assemblages and sculptural works, often incorporating found objects and bold typography. He became known for his hard-edge painting style and his use of words and numbers as central motifs. His work often explored themes of American identity, consumerism, and personal history. The artist’s key works include his “EAT” sign for the 1964 New York World’s Fair, his “American Dream” series, and his numerous variations on the word “LOVE.” He moved to Vinalhaven, Maine, in 1978, where he continued to produce art until his death in 2018.
