Le Portrait

Le Portrait is a work Dran painted in Barcelona during the period when he was preparing the exhibition Tiens. During this time, he undertook a three-month artistic residency at La Escocesa Art Factory. The painting is a portrait he made of one of the resident artists, known for her geometric abstraction work, with whom he shared a close bond during his stay. The painting depicts a young girl painting a giant, colourful heart on a grey wall. Here, in a unique approach, Dran plays with an element somewhere between representation and appropriation, allowing the work to operate on several levels at once: an overwhelming gesture of romanticism in which Dran attempts to imitate the very technique used by the artist to create clean, straight lines in her work, using masking tape. In the piece, the paint deliberately spills beyond the geometric lines, allowing the spray paint to seep and drip beneath the rigid boundaries. This can be read as a metaphor, or as a visual statement about the impossibility of containing Dran’s own visceral nature: an intentional mistake, a tribute born of imperfect love. The fact that the figure has to climb onto a chair to reach the wall symbolises the immense effort required to carry out such a project, as well as the determination of innocence to keep love alive in a hostile environment. It is a visual metaphor that is both deeply tender and, at the same time, heartbreaking. Dran frequently employs a childlike aesthetic to address themes of greater emotional complexity, disarming the viewer before revealing a deeper message, often dark and charged with symbolism that extends beyond what is immediately visible. In Le Portrait, this symbolic dimension is inextricably linked to the personal and artistic story that gave rise to the work.
