About the artwork

This is a painting by Pierre Sgamma depicting a heart surrounded by roses and a luminous halo. This emblematic work illustrates his artistic practice, drawing on various surrealist influences. The symbolic and metaphorical nature of the background, with its halo, contrasts with the realistic treatment of the organ. "The Heart" offers multiple levels of interpretation. Envisaging his works in dialogue with the viewer, he declares that he seeks to decipher the shadowy areas present in every individual. Symbols such as the skull, the couple, the feather and the mask are recurrent in his work, always questioning the strangeness of reality.

About the artist

Born in Algiers in August 1961, Pierre Sgamma is a painter, ceramist and sculptor. Over the years, Pierre Sgamma has developed his own personal universe. The importance of color and gestural expression are constant features of his work. His works draw on a variety of influences, summoning up the imagination of childhood as well as spirituality and animist practices. In 2019, Galerie du Beffroi organized an exhibition focusing on his creations entitled Métamorphose. From October to February 2020, he exhibited at the Campredon art center in l'Isle sur la Sorgue, looking back over his last five years of creation. In 2024, he presented his work in Paris at the Halle Saint-Pierre, a Mecca of art brut, from August to September.
