About the artwork
This polystone sculpture presents two figures in British police uniforms engaged in an embrace and kiss. The figures are rendered in a platinum finish, with details such as uniforms, hats, handcuffs, and batons visible. The composition depicts the two individuals in profile, with their arms around each other, suggesting an intimate moment. The overall aesthetic mimics the stencil-like quality characteristic of street art. The imagery originates from Banksy's "Kissing Coppers," a stencil graffiti piece that first appeared on the wall of The Prince Albert pub in Brighton in 2004. The original mural depicted two male British policemen kissing, rendered in black and white. This work gained attention for its provocative nature and its commentary on social issues, particularly in Brighton,a city known for its LGBTQ+ community. The original artwork was subject to vandalism and was eventually removed for preservation in 2008,with a replica installed in its place. The original was later sold at auction in 2014.
Expert opinion
The work operates within the context of contemporary art collectibles, specifically those derived from street art. The original imagery by Banksy is recognized for its social commentary and its role in the street art movement, which often challenges traditional art institutions and commercialization. This sculpture, produced by Brandalised, represents a commercial adaptation of that iconic imagery, translating a public, often illicit, artwork into a manufactured, collectible object. This process reflects the broader trend of street art's integration into the mainstream art market, where works initially created for public consumption are recontextualized as limited-edition items. The market position for such pieces is typically within the collectible art segment, appealing to enthusiasts of street art and contemporary design who seek tangible representations of well-known urban artworks.
