About the artwork

This work by Izima Kaoru is composed of four photographs, each a closer shot of the same subject. The subject is an inanimate woman on the roof of a building in Benares on the banks of the Ganges, wearing a couture dress. The work's immediate aesthetic gives it a cinematic feel, as it plunges the viewer into an enigma that he or she is tempted to solve.

Expert opinion

Izima Kaoru is celebrated the world over for his photographs combining the themes of death, celebrity, sexuality and fashion. His best-known series is Landscapes with a corpse, in which he invites famous actresses and models to imagine their own deaths, which he then stages in front of the camera, while his subjects pose in haute couture clothes. This is one of them, and a major work in the Japanese artist's career. It should also be noted that this series was limited to just seven prints, and that it is rare to find the complete set, as each of the photos has already been sold separately.

About the artist

Born in Kyoto in 1954, Izima Kaoru is a photographer who lives and works in Tokyo. He began his career in photography with his first exhibition, It's a Beautiful Day, in 1977. In 1993, the artist embarked on a photographic project that remains his most famous to this day. His Landscapes with a Corpse series shifts the usual image of beauty and glamour towards the macabre. At the same time, the photographer established a publishing business, which led him to found the magazine Zyappu in 1994.
