About the artwork
This work features a 1000 yen banknote adorned with the artist's blaze and inscribed with the Japanese flag. Tilt establishes a visual link between the title of the work, Japon, the nature of the banknote and the colors of the tag. The lettering of his blaze is in keeping with his urban art practice and adopts the bubble style, underlining the direct influence of graffiti in this design. The artist's choice of medium seems to evoke the ephemeral popularity of both the banknote, which in essence circulates, and graffiti, which is quickly replaced on the street. This work is part of a series produced on banknotes from different countries, in which Tilt inserts his name under the color of the flag of the nation in question.
Expert opinion
This piece is typical of Tilt's work, with its emphasis on his blaze. It was presented during an exhibition at the David Pluskwa gallery in Marseille in 2013.
About the artist
Born in Toulouse in 1973, Tilt is a French graffiti artist. His first tags date back to 1988 on skateboard ramps, but his practice developed in the street and on trains. Thanks to his extensive travels and the creation of his own studio, his work gained international recognition. His distinctive, bubble-influenced style emerges in both his lettering and his intricate, figurative compositions. Represented by the David Pluskwa gallery in Marseille, he took part in the Epoxy exhibition in 2016 as part of the Rose Béton festival in Toulouse, and exhibited at venues such as the Musée des Abattoirs in Toulouse alongside renowned artists such as Futura, Craig Costello, Boris Tellegen and Mist. Tilt has also published several books combining his art and photography, including Fetish Bubble Girls, My Love Letters and Photograffitiltism.
“[I work] in a studio, and [I] try to develop personal work around legal graffiti with a rather contemporary vision.”
