About the artwork
This work depicts a bird's head in profile, with a very realistic look and beak. Around this realistic base, L7M unleashes bursts of color: colored splashes mixed with nervous strokes and semi-blurred geometric patterns. This work merges two approaches: hyperrealism and explosive abstraction. The overall impression is that of an animal caught in a whirlpool, on the borderline between appearance and dissolution, as if to remind us of the threat hanging over these free-ranging species.
Expert opinion
This work is typical of L7M's work, which focuses on Brazil's ecological and social issues.
About the artist
Luis Martins, aka L7MATRIX or L7M, was born in 1988 in São Paulo and developed a passion for drawing from an early age. Introduced at the age of 16 to pixação, a form of Brazilian protest graffiti, he then explored spray painting in abandoned areas. His art focuses on Brazil's ecological and social issues. His works contrast the vibrant freedom of tropical birds, with their bright colors and geometric patterns, with dark human portraits, symbols of alienation by the media. For him, urban art is a tool for awareness-raising and revolt. L7M has exhibited his work in several galleries in Brazil, such as Art Rua in Rio de Janeiro, but also internationally, notably in France at Next Street Gallery in Paris in 2019. He has also taken part in street art festivals and monumental fresco projects.
