About the artwork
Part object, part work of art, this card by Invader retraces the artist's journey during his "invasion" of New York in 2003. The artist is celebrated the world over for his mosaic invasions of cities around the globe. For this, he takes the aliens from the Space Invaders game, whose name he appropriated, and imposes them on urban space, like invaders gaining ground. Embracing a pop aesthetic, like its characters, the map is adorned with colorful tiles reminiscent of the visual universe of 1980s arcade terminals. Once unfolded, the map retains its tiles, and the Hudson River, emblematic of New York City, is itself "invaded" by Invader's aesthetic.
Expert opinion
This work is the result of the 11th Invaders invasion project, which has now invaded over 170 cities. With over 200 Space Invaders, New York is the second most invaded city in the world. It should be remembered, however, that not every invasion is accompanied by a map.
About the artist
Invader (b. 1969, France) is a leading figure in urban art. He is famous for his Space Invader-inspired mosaics, installed on the walls of over 80 cities worldwide. His work, both discreet and omnipresent, questions visual invasion, collective memory and urban cartography.
His visual language, based on the pixel as a basic unit, evokes geek culture, street art and the decorative arts. He also creates limited-edition works, such as this silkscreen, which translate his universe into more intimate formats.
“I kept the name of the game as an alias because it's a perfect definition of my work. I'm a space invader.”
