About the artwork
This work revisits a fresco painted by Pejac on the wall of a hospital in his native Santander during the COVID-19 pandemic. From a distance, thousands of small figures form the illusion of a giant crevasse, symbolizing both the tragedies of the pandemic and the global solidarity that ensued. There are several editions of this series. In the first editions, the crevasse is not yet formed, but only isolated figures. The merging of tiny figures to create a larger image is a powerful metaphor for the impact of collective action. HOPE embodies art's ability to transcend collective trials and promote unity.
Expert opinion
This trompe l'oeil is typical of Pejac's urban work.
