About the artwork

HAYU is a limited edition screenprint by Roby Dwi Antono, which condenses the central themes of his work into a pared-down, carefully composed format. It depicts a childlike figure with a rounded, expressive face, both human and chimerical, floating in a dreamlike, depthless space. The silkscreen technique, with its smooth, matte finish, accentuates the graphic purity of the composition and the muted softness of the pastel hues. The process also allows for great line precision, giving the figure an almost iconic presence. The title HAYU, an Indonesian term meaning "come" or "let's go", acts as a gentle injunction, an invitation to enter a silent, symbolic world. With its references to pop surrealism and children's imagery, this work blends innocence and strangeness, in a singular aesthetic somewhere between dream and melancholy.

Expert opinion

With its formal simplicity and emotional power, HAYU testifies to the mastery with which Roby Dwi Antono transposes his universe into the silkscreen medium. This work, accessible in format but dense in aura, embodies the visual poetry of an artist in search of memory and transcendence. A powerful piece, both delicate and disturbing, emblematic of the revival of narrative graphics in Asia.

About the artist
