About the artwork

With a pixilated touch, this canvas evokes an old portrait whose paint seems as if erased by time. Part of the series that followed their success with the painting "Edmond de Bellami" sold at Christie's New York for $432,500, this unique canvas-printed piece is signed with the algorithmic formula that generated it. To bring this work to life, Obvious designed an algorithm fed by thousands of images of antique portraits. This process allows the AI to absorb the classical aesthetic to create a resolutely modern work. This audacious fusion of tradition and technology offers an unprecedented artistic exploration through the prism of artificial intelligence.

Expert opinion

Replacing the traditional paint palette with a palette of algorithms, this work, the fruit of digital art pioneers, NFTs and art creation with AI, bears witness to Obvious's revolutionary advances in the contemporary art world.

About the artist

Obvious is a collective of three French friends, Pierre Fautrel, Hugo Caselles-Dupré and Gauthier Vernier, all born in 1993. Artists and researchers, they use artificial intelligence, and more specifically GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) algorithms, to create their works. Their creations are signed with the algorithmic formula that generated them. Pioneers of digital art, they were the first French artists to create NFTs, back in 2018, with the work "Eryn Nemesis". Their works are exhibited worldwide, including at the National Museum of China in Beijing (2019), Haus der Kunst in Munich (2020), and Galerie Danysz in Paris (2022). They gained notoriety with the sale of their painting "Edmond de Belamy" at Christie's New York in 2018 for over $400,000.

“Our desire to create came about when Hugo, who is a researcher in artificial intelligence, discovered algorithms capable of replicating part of the creative process during his scientific research. This led to a number of philosophical and artistic discussions, which we wanted to share with as many people as possible afterwards.”
