About the artwork
Does this little boy in black and white, with blurred outlines and a yellow scarf, seem to be laughing, or is he crying out in pain? With a restricted color palette, the artist emphasizes the central element of the scarf, directing the viewer's gaze to the subject's color and action. Indeed, he may be echoing the red scarves worn by children and students of the Chinese Communist Youth League. Symbolizing a strong ideology, the boy in the scarf seems intent on breaking free and breaking his chains.
Expert opinion
A work from his youth, this canvas bears witness to his artistic reflection. Technique and subject matter far removed from his contemporary work, "Boy with Yellow Scarf" retraces the steps in his work that have made Guo Hongwei the internationally acclaimed artist he is today.
About the artist
Born in 1982 in Chengdu (China), Guo Hongwei is a Chinese artist based in Beijing (China). He studied painting at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute (Chongqing, China), graduating in 2004. His artistic inspiration comes from the work of Edgar Degas, whose paintings he believes embody spirituality, retaining certain academic qualities while avoiding convention. Renowned for his watercolor paintings, in which he perfectly reproduces the details offered by nature, Guo Hongwei seeks out the material essence of the objects he depicts.
Exhibited in museums around the world (Zendai Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai, 2006; Pacific Heritage Museum, San Francisco, 2009; Tampa Museum of Art & Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, 2014; Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, California, 2015), his works are also shown in international fairs and galleries (Frieze, New York, 2014; Frieze, London, 2015 : Paris Asian Art Faire, Paris, 2019) since his first monographic exhibition Dissolution of Memory in 2007 at Connoisseur Art Gallery and 82 Republic (Hong Kong, China).
