About the artwork

Hanae Sabir's figurative canvas "Veiled Woman" features a woman's face draped in a mauve veil in the foreground. The gesturality, density and texture of the work lend the canvas a remarkable expressive power. Sabir describes his practice as neo-expressionist, in the tradition of artists such as the German Georg Baselitz. The place of women in Muslim society runs through his entire artistic output. For her, militant commitment and artistic practice are inseparable, and her creations include a significant autobiographical dimension.

Expert opinion

In terms of subject and execution, this painting belongs to the neo-expressionist movement. Hanae Sabir is a precocious artist recognized both in Morocco and internationally. Art critics and collectors alike praise the innovative nature of each of her works. Her portraits are relevant and sensitive, and question the contemporary world with accuracy.

About the artist

Born in Morocco in 1987, Hanae Sabir is a prize-winner at the Beaux-Arts de Tanger art school and a visual artist encouraged by her art teacher father. A prolific artist, she soon made a name for herself, winning numerous prizes in drawing and painting competitions in Tangier, Cairo and Spain. She exhibited for the first time at the "8 Mars 8 Femmes" event in Tangier. In 2008, she represented Morocco at the prestigious Biennale des Arts. Among her main artistic references, Sabir cites Juan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Rebecca Horn and Gharbaoui.

“"I was the youngest artist there, and it was a good opportunity to exchange knowledge. I received the official invitation to join the Art Rain association, which had organized this artistic event, and that was my baptism," she says of her first exhibition in Tangier, "8 Mars 8 Femmes".”
