About the artwork
The superimposition of transparent yellow and red laser-cut acrylic sheets, overhung by a wire mesh, lends sculptural depth to the work. The almost unidentifiable yellow background seems to add an architectural backdrop to the composition. The second sheet, a major layer, provides a framework for the viewer's understanding. Here, we can easily make out a figure seen in profile, with lasers seemingly shooting from his eyes and a cigarette in his mouth. Yet AkaCorleone does not seem to expect the viewer to fully decipher the work. Fear of Missing Out expresses this sense of visual hubbub perfectly. The character, obsessed by the chaos enclosed beneath the third and final layer of wire mesh, seems to be an interpretation of our society. If he were to detach his gaze from distractions, from the prevailing social anxiety otherwise known as FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), he could escape to the real world. The artist creates a strong bond between the work and the viewer, prompting them to plunge into his fictional world or to see themselves in the mirror.
Expert opinion
This work takes up the codes of urban art, recalling the line of the famous Keith Haring with its graphic shapes bouncing off one another. A unique piece, it is at the heart of the artist's narrative artistic reflection and his work on matter, which is very present in AkaCorleone's work.
About the artist
Born in Lisbon in 1985, Pedro Campiche, aka AkaCorleone, studied graphic design at the IADE-Creative University and began his artistic career in the 2000s as a graffiti artist. In 2008, he began working on murals, and two years later, he exhibited his first works in galleries. From 2010 onwards, AkaCorleone defined an aesthetic for his work, which he continues to embody today. A multidisciplinary artist, street-artist AkaCorleone experiments with supports such as wood, cement, stone and tiles, as well as bas-relief and laser-cutting techniques. He loves color and builds his art around a desire for expression, taking it as a means of understanding and humanizing the environment. In 2012, the artist had his first solo exhibition in Switzerland. From the following year, he participated in festivals and exported his work around the world (Thailand, India, Romania, Spain, USA...). Today, he has more than 20 exhibitions to his name, including at the Underdogs gallery in Lisbon, Mathgoth in Paris in 2020, and at the Lisbon Natural History Museum in 2021.
