About the artwork
This work features a winged figure in the form of an antique-inspired marble sculpture. The canvas is divided into three horizontal sections. While the center of the canvas offers a faithful representation of the marble figure, the extremities are sketched and colored. Presenting the figure of Eros, the Greek divinity of love (whose features recall those of Antonio Canova's L'Amour et Psyché à demi couchée), César Malfi offers a reinterpretation of ancient art using a tool familiar from urban art. The chromatic choices add a temporal symbolism to the work: the purple background, an imperial and Roman color, frames the central representation, while a blue background, evoking the sky and the present, extends over the other parts, offering a contemporary and modern representation of the figure of Eros. This work was created during a performance in which the artist painted for 24 hours.
Expert opinion
In keeping with his monumental productions, César Malfi offers us a very large-format work that fits in perfectly with his practice and demonstrates his desire to infuse urban art with references to classical culture.
About the artist
César Malfi is a young French artist who works and lives in Nice. After studying law, he began his artistic practice in 2017. From drawing to graffiti, via painting, he draws his inspiration from Antiquity, giving ancient canons a new dimension and questioning their identity and place in our modern society. His Italian roots, his many trips to Greece and his peregrinations in museums consolidate his classical culture and irrigate his practice. He will produce works for Galeries Lafayette in 2021, the Saint-Jean-d'Angely university campus in 2022 and the Château du Crémat in 2023. A solo exhibition entitled "Noms de Dieux!" will be dedicated to him in 2023 at the Musée Archéologique de Nice.
“Ancient works of art have an inestimable potential to enrich our present and reflect eras that have shaped our history.”
