About the artwork
This sculpture, sometimes referred to as “Disc” or “Bird’s Profile,” reflects Georges Braque’s late period, characterized by his exploration of signs and poetic symbolism. Based on an original from 1938, this gilded and painted plaster edition takes the form of a dreamlike medallion: a face in profile with fluid contours, stylized to the extreme, superimposed on a shape evoking a bird—a recurring motif in the artist’s work.
The deep blue color against a gold background evokes precious materials while emphasizing the figure’s mystical and timeless quality. The choice of a circular format reinforces the idea of a votive medallion—almost solar in nature—suspended in space.
Expert opinion
At the intersection of abstraction and symbolism, this work by Braque encapsulates the meditative dimension of his art. The stylized profile, set against a golden disc, becomes a metaphor for elevation, bridging human thought and the flight of a bird.
