About the artwork

December Remember (2018) is an edition by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, emblematic of his visual universe saturated with floral motifs, bright colors and references to Japanese pop culture. The work features an explosion of smiling, pastel-hued flowers, arranged in a hypnotic network on a white background, in a style that is both childlike and ultra-constructed. Behind this apparent joy, Murakami evokes the passage of time and the fragility of memory. The title, December Remember, suggests a retrospective, intimate and melancholy look, in a visual language where emotions are translated by joyful yet repetitive, almost obsessive motifs. As is often the case with Murakami, the line between depth and lightness is blurred.

Expert opinion

Beneath its cheerful airs, December Remember returns us to the bittersweet nostalgia of remembrance, where every flower seems to smile, the better to mask the passing of time.
