About the artwork
This drawing by renowned Serbian artist Vladimir Véličković depicts a falling body still held together by ropes holding back its arm. The movement is accentuated by the doubling of the figure's head, as if the artist had depicted two sequences of the same scene, amplifying his fall. Vladimir Véličković's work plunges us into an apocalyptic world of menacing animals, ravaged landscapes and impossible outcomes. Man is alone, fleeing, often headless, responsible for his own misfortune and capable of the worst. Although the Serbian painter has seen the horrors of war with his own eyes, he seems above all to capture the violence that inhabits all times and places.
Expert opinion
This drawing belongs to the artist's series of sketches, drawings made with spontaneity during his escapades outside the studio. Vladimir Véličković, who died in 2019, was an Academician and is collected by major museums such as the Centre Pompidou.
Celebrated around the world for his precise gestures and macabre inspirations, this drawing is in keeping with the painter's universe and provides an opportunity to acquire a unique and reasonably priced work by the artist.
About the artist
Born in Belgrade in 1935 and dying in Split (Croatia) in 2019, Vladimir Véličković was a painter, draughtsman and engraver considered one of the major figures of narrative figuration. The artist experienced war when he was just six years old, and was deeply marked by its horrors, which would then haunt all his work. Indeed, Véličković's paintings (like his drawings) depict a tortured humanity inhabiting a gloomy universe; an illustration of his own anxieties about a society in decline. His first exhibition took place in Paris in 1967, revealing him to the general public. His canvases did not meet with unanimous approval, the sense of devastation in them disturbing some. Nevertheless, he was considered a great painter of his time, winning numerous exhibitions and, in 2006, a place in the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He is collected by major museums such as the Centre Pompidou.
