About the artwork

This edition features the iconic "Chuttt!!!" image, one of Jef Aérosol's most famous motifs. The black-and-white face, with its intense, frontal gaze, is accompanied by the universal gesture of a finger on the lips. The little red arrow, the artist's recurring visual signature, acts as a graphic and conceptual anchor in the composition. The work has its origins in the monumental stencil created in 2011 in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, opposite the Stravinsky fountain by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely. With this strategic location at the heart of a major artistic and tourist landscape, Jef Aérosol places street art in direct dialogue with the history of modern art and public space. The offset edition of 2022, produced for the "40 ans de pochoirs" exhibition organized by Galerie Mathgoth, transposes this urban image into the field of collecting. The powerful contrast of black and white, the grainy texture reminiscent of a wall, and the frontal nature of the portrait give the work an immediate, timeless force. The work retains the energy of the urban gesture while adopting the controlled format of the signed edition.

Expert opinion

Jef Aérosol, a major figure in the first generation of French street art, has played a historic role in the development of stencil art since the early 1980s. Today, his work is institutionally recognized and collected both in France and internationally. This edition of 2022 is part of a retrospective celebration of forty years of practice, giving it a special documentary and symbolic value. Although this is a multiple edition, the handwritten pencil signature reinforces its authenticity and appeal to collectors. On the secondary market, Jef Aérosol's iconic images, notably "Chuttt!!!", enjoy immediate recognition and constant demand. The combination of an emblematic motif, a good state of preservation and a publishing context linked to an anniversary exhibition makes for a coherent and attractive package, both for collectors of historic street art and for investors attentive to the durability of pioneering artists.

About the artist

Born in 1957, Jean-François Perroy, known as Jef Aérosol, is a French graffiti artist. He became known in the 1980s for his portraits of famous personalities and cultural icons. He is considered one of the historic pioneers of the stencil art technique, using complex techniques to create detailed images. His work is now characterized by extensive use of black and white, with the exception of that famous red arrow, a real trademark and "disruptive element". Internationally recognized, Jef Aérosol has taken part in numerous exhibitions and urban art festivals, making him a major figure on the contemporary street art scene. In 2009, he took part in the "No Man's Land" event invited by the French Embassy in Tokyo, and in 2012, he created a monumental fresco at Beaubourg (Paris). He exhibits in numerous galleries around the world (Dublin, 2009; Brooklyn, 2010; London, 2010; Casablanca, 2010; Buenos Aires, 2013...).
