About the artwork
Cubist fragmentation structures this interior tabletop arrangement, juxtaposing segmented views of domestic objects against a coastal background visible through an arched opening. A wicker container holding pomegranates and a pear anchors the foreground, while a dark bottle and a ceramic pitcher stand adjacent to a vessel filled with blue blossoms. The central vertical axis divides the picture plane into shifting spatial perspectives, incorporating planar geometries and Cyrillic lettering that reads "У МОРЯ" near the upper window frame.
The composition reflects the artist's engagement with synthetic cubist spatial division, merging interior and exterior viewpoints into a unified surface grid. Muted earthen tones dominate the palette, contrasted by the bright turquoise expanse of the sea and the deep red of the fruit. This arrangement exemplifies the decorative planar solutions and rhythmic distribution of forms characteristic of the creator's mature period.
Expert opinion
This painting exemplifies the integration of traditional European modernist idioms into late Soviet-era domestic painting. The synthesis of analytical fragmentation with regional subject matter demonstrates the persistence of avant-garde structural methods within unofficial or semi-independent studio practices of the period.
About the artist
Aram Avakimovich Kupetsyan was a Russian and Soviet painter and graphic artist born in Budyonnovsk. He completed his education at the Moscow Pedagogical Institute, followed by postgraduate studies at the Research Institute of the USSR Academy of Arts. Over several decades, he maintained a professional career in Moscow as a senior art editor for the Soviet Artist publishing house while actively participating in regional and all-union exhibitions.
The visual language of the creator developed under the dual influence of early twentieth-century European Cubism, particularly the structural approaches of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, and the expressive traditions of the Russian avant-garde. A formative journey to Armenia in 1954 shifted his artistic focus toward decorative chromatic structures and personal emotional interpretation of motifs rather than strict naturalism. His output predominantly consists of structured still lifes and landscapes incorporating musical or architectural elements.
Works by the artist have entered public collections including the National Gallery of Armenia, alongside regional museums in Kislovodsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Nalchik. International distribution of his output includes private collections across Europe, the United States, and Japan. The creator lived and worked in Moscow until his death in 2017.
