About the artwork

This body of work comprises eight James Jean pieces. Seven of them are composed in the same way, with a creature depicted in a different whimsical environment each time. In each work, the figures are distorted and transformed into fluid, abstract forms, creating a sensation of constant movement. This is a visual exploration of the members of BTS, a seven-member South Korean K-pop boy band. It would seem that each of the figures corresponds to one of the group's members, the whole being interpreted as a journey through different states. The eighth work depicts a garden of flowers in which seven creatures are seated. This last work is a reference to the lyrics of the song "The Truth Untold", depicting the band members as flower spirits gathering in a flower garden. The fluidity of the forms and the dynamic use of color create a total immersion in a fantastic world, while questioning the viewer on the notion of change and evolution, both on an individual and collective level.

Expert opinion

"BTS Seven Phases" demonstrates James Jean's ability to combine timeless visual elements with contemporary symbolism. The work captures the essence of BTS through a visual exploration of transition and transformation, themes that resonate with the messages of personal growth and reinvention present in the band's music.
