About the artwork

In this painting, a solitary cloud floats in a softly hued blue sky, reminiscent of the texture of a marshmallow. Time seems suspended, frozen in this moment of strange tranquility. The pictorial space, saturated in blue, subtly plays with depths and surfaces, revealing almost imperceptible strata of color. The scene, though simple, is imbued with a discreet tension between apparent reality and an invisible off-field that invites reverie.

Expert opinion

This cloud, at once familiar and elusive, embodies a poetic in-between, floating somewhere between the real and the imaginary. In this small canvas, Johan Bonnefoy expresses his art and mastery of landscape painting.

About the artist

Johan Bonnefoy is a French contemporary artist born in 1986. He lives and works in Haute-Loire. A graduate of the Ecole Supérieure d'Art de Clermont-Ferrand, his art is centered on the landscape, which he explores through painting. More than a simple subject, the landscape becomes for him a raw material that he shapes and deconstructs in his work. Through a complex process of to-ing and fro-ing between the field and the studio, he succeeds in transcribing a deeply personal vision of the outdoors onto canvas. Using photographs taken outdoors as a vast sketchbook, he seeks to render the motif of passage through nature, taking the form of a boundary between two universes or two states. Johan Bonnefoy has exhibited in France (Paris, Abbaye de Pébrac) and the UK (London).

“That's what interests me about painting: contemplating the landscape and retranscribing it as sensitively and emotionally as possible, to reach a state of waking dream, sometimes even of disquieting strangeness.”
