About the artwork
This vertical composition features an array of colorful, drip-like forms against a light, neutral background. The shapes, resembling elongated ovals or stylized drops, are rendered in a diverse palette including reds, blues, greens, yellows, oranges, purples, and various shades of grey and white. Many of these forms exhibit visible paint drips extending downwards, indicating a fluid application technique. The background appears to be an unprimed or lightly toned canvas, allowing the texture of the weave to remain visible beneath the painted elements. Some areas show a thicker impasto, while others are flatter, suggesting a varied approach to paint application. The overall arrangement of the forms creates a sense of movement and density across the surface, with no single focal point dominating the visual field. The application includes both solid blocks of color and instances where paint has been sprayed or thinly applied, creating softer edges or subtle gradients within certain shapes. The drips vary in length and thickness, contributing to the work's dynamic and somewhat spontaneous character. The piece is presented within a simple white frame, which provides a clean boundary for the composition.
Expert opinion
This work aligns with contemporary abstract painting, drawing on traditions of gestural abstraction and color field painting while incorporating a visual vocabulary that resonates with street art aesthetics. The artist's use of drips and bold, often flat, color shapes places the piece within a lineage that can be traced to post-war abstraction and later developments in urban art. The market for such works is driven by collectors interested in accessible yet visually engaging contemporary art. The artist's established presence in gallery exhibitions and his consistent output contribute to a stable market position. Pieces of this scale and visual impact tend to perform well, particularly those that exemplify the artist's signature style. The work's vibrant palette and dynamic composition make it suitable for various collecting contexts, from private collections to corporate spaces.
About the artist
Born in Chile in 1969, Flavien Demarigny aka Mambo grew up in Latin America before moving to Paris, Los Angeles and Provence, where he now lives and works. He began his career in street art, joining several French collectives before establishing himself on the international scene. His style is characterized by a mix of organic lines, bright colors and graphic motifs inspired by both popular culture and contemporary art. The link between all Flavien "Mambo" Demarigny's creations is the quest for impact and balance, both visually and emotionally. Along the way, Mambo has developed three main abstract series: Brainology, Mindscapes and the Strokes. His first solo show was in Chicago in 1999. This was followed by exhibitions in Paris, notably at Magda Danysz and Agnès B, but also in Tokyo, Los Angeles, Geneva and Barcelona, during which Mambo honed his style and language.
