Antinomy

Julie Legrand (b. 1973, France) is a French artist who lives and works in Picardy. Her multidisciplinary background combines literature, philosophy, fine art, design, and an extensive exploration of glass and its transformative properties. After studying philosophy and earning a Master's degree in Modern Literature from Paris VIII, Legrand graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure d'Art de Cergy and later completed the CTC professional Master's program in contemporary design and technology at ENSCI Saint-Sabin. Her training also led her to explore various glassmaking techniques, notably through her work with the Centre International d'Art Verrier in Meisenthal. Since 1996, Legrand has developed a practice centered on sculptural installations distinguished by a heightened sensitivity to space, material experimentation, and a singular visual language. Her work investigates materials in states of transformation, combining a precise understanding of their physical properties with a careful consideration of the environments in which her installations take shape. Through assembly, manipulation, and experimentation, particularly with glass, Legrand explores the tension between fragility and solidity, control and unpredictability. Her practice is characterized by an ongoing dialogue between material, space, and an intimate artistic universe that, like the materials she works with, remains in constant evolution.
