About the artwork
This work was produced in 1944, at the height of the Second World War. It combines an almost childlike, naive imagery with a tragic theme. In the foreground, a bright orange ambulance adorned with a red cross crosses a scene dominated by dark solids and trees. In the background, we can make out a city in ruins or in flames, and improvised barricades. The painting is characterized by an expressive use of color, simplified forms and an almost primitivist treatment of perspective. This deliberately raw aesthetic reinforces the emotional intensity of the subject. The whole evokes urgency, resistance and humanity in the midst of chaos.
Expert opinion
This work, still figurative, already reveals a tension between form and abstraction, and thus testifies to a pivotal period in Jean Pons' artistic evolution.
