About the artwork
In this work, Daniel Arsham invokes the heritage of ancient statuary while subverting it with a resolutely contemporary aesthetic. Amalgamized Bust of Veiled Woman evokes the neoclassical busts of the 19th century, marked by the sculptural illusion of the veil, a technique emblematic of the Italian school. Arsham hijacks the formal language by juxtaposing materials and textures: marble, chrome, polished bronze and green stone, in a three-dimensional trompe-l'œil collage.
The work, all elegance and contrast, deliberately blurs the boundaries between past and future, figuration and abstraction. The stratification effect gives the bust a fragmented temporality, as if time itself had acted as sculptor. In this, Arsham adheres to the vanitas tradition, while infusing it with a post-digital reading of the body and the historical object.
This piece questions the durability of Western aesthetic canons, reconfiguring them through the lens of amalgamation: a process that here becomes a critical and poetic stance on our relationship to memory, beauty and art in mutation.
Expert opinion
Daniel Arsham's work fascinates with its contemporary reinterpretation of the classical bust, transformed here into a hybrid entity in which each material evokes a distinct temporality.
About the artist
Born in Cleveland in 1980, Daniel Arsham is an American artist who lives and works in New York. Basing his artistic practice on a kind of fictional archaeology, he creates, crystallizes and erodes objects and silhouettes from our present. Combining the present, the future and the past, Daniel Arsham imposes an aesthetic as a timeless, cross-cultural experience. Exhibited worldwide, his work has been shown at Galerie Perrotin since 2005. His aesthetic has also been popularized by numerous collaborations, including with Moët & Chandon, Tiffany & Co and the famous Pokémon franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995.
