AMALGAMIZED BUST OF VEILED WOMAN

In this work, Daniel Arsham invokes the heritage of ancient statuary while subverting it with a resolutely contemporary aesthetic. Amalgamized Bust of Veiled Woman evokes the neoclassical busts of the 19th century, marked by the sculptural illusion of the veil, a technique emblematic of the Italian school. Arsham hijacks the formal language by juxtaposing materials and textures: marble, chrome, polished bronze and green stone, in a three-dimensional trompe-l'œil collage. The work, all elegance and contrast, deliberately blurs the boundaries between past and future, figuration and abstraction. The stratification effect gives the bust a fragmented temporality, as if time itself had acted as sculptor. In this, Arsham adheres to the vanitas tradition, while infusing it with a post-digital reading of the body and the historical object. This piece questions the durability of Western aesthetic canons, reconfiguring them through the lens of amalgamation: a process that here becomes a critical and poetic stance on our relationship to memory, beauty and art in mutation.
