About the artwork
In Amalgamized Bust of Melpomene, Daniel Arsham reinterprets the codes of ancient statuary. Inspired by Melpomene, the ill-fated muse of Greek mythology, the artist conjures up classical iconography, fragmenting and fusing it with contemporary textures such as chrome, bronze and artificial hues. This recomposed bust evokes archaeological ruins, while adopting a visual language akin to design and science fiction. In this way, Arsham places his work in the tradition of contemporary neo-classicism, where the memory of antiquity is filtered through the anxieties and aesthetics of the postmodern era.
Expert opinion
Daniel Arsham's work is distinguished by its subtle dialogue between classical heritage and futuristic aesthetics, challenging our perception of time and the durability of form. The use of materials evoking marble, polished metal and oxidation creates a powerful, almost anachronistic visual contrast. Through this fusion of temporalities, Arsham transforms a mythological figure into a contemporary icon.
About the artist
Born in Cleveland in 1980, Daniel Arsham is an American artist who lives and works in New York. Basing his artistic practice on a kind of fictional archaeology, he creates, crystallizes and erodes objects and silhouettes from our present. Combining the present, the future and the past, Daniel Arsham imposes an aesthetic as a timeless, cross-cultural experience. Exhibited worldwide, his work has been shown at Galerie Perrotin since 2005. His aesthetic has also been popularized by numerous collaborations, including with Moët & Chandon, Tiffany & Co and the famous Pokémon franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995.
