About the artwork
Mickalene Thomas, with Afro Goddess Looking Forward, asserts black feminine power through glamour, rhinestones and patterns. The portrait becomes a visual manifesto of visibility and pride.
Expert opinion
Glamour, patterns and rhinestones assert black feminine power with an assumed brilliance. Thomas recomposes the historical portrait through a contemporary politics of visibility.
