About the artwork
At the center of this poster stands Debbie De Coudreaux, a dancer from the Doriss Girls troupe, caught mid-flight in an audacious gesture. In flowing ribbons of red and a bold splash of inky black, Gruau distills the energy of the French cancan into a single, unforgettable silhouette. The composition is radically spare, white ground, three colors, commanding type, and yet it vibrates with life.
Expert opinion
"Formidable !" is among his most celebrated images for the Montmartre institution: a full-length vertical composition in red, black, and white, entirely characteristic of his work for Paris cabarets, printed at scale for the walls of Place Blanche and the streets beyond.
About the artist
René Gruau (Rimini, 1909 - Rome, 2004) was one of the twentieth century's foremost fashion illustrators. Self-taught, he settled in Paris in 1928 and worked for Vogue, Marie-Claire, and L'Officiel before becoming Christian Dior's defining visual voice, signing four decades of iconic campaigns for the house. From 1956, he turned to the great Parisian cabarets: the Lido, the Casino de Paris, and the Moulin Rouge from 1961. His style, built on bold black line, vivid red and white ground, remains one of the century's most instantly recognizable graphic signatures.
