About the artwork

This work by Brazilian painter Rogerio Tunes is an abstract, informal labyrinth of chromatic superimpositions. Sovereign black is enhanced by the presence of touches of white, blending to create strong grays. A few touches of red add depth to these chiaroscuro chromatisms. The freedom of gesture and the absence of contours leave it to our imagination to set the limits.

Expert opinion

The vital energy that emanates from Rogerio Tunes' canvases is quite singular. The influence of Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning can be seen in the freedom of the brushstroke and the expressiveness of the forms.

About the artist

An artist of Brazilian origin, Rogerio Tunes' work has been nourished by his travels and encounters. In the 1980s, he traveled to New York, where he came face to face with Pollock's abstract expressionism, which had a major influence on his practice. In the years that followed, around 1990, the artist put his graphic arts diploma to good use and opened a silkscreen workshop, which became a vehicle for encounters and exchanges with other artists. In 2000, he turned his attention to the visual arts, producing works that quickly attracted critical attention. The colorful superimpositions in his paintings create a sense of harmony as much as loss. The viewer, in search of meaning, is necessarily drawn to the erasure of contours and formal markers. His work has been exhibited many times in Brazil, as well as in the United States, Argentina and Europe.
