About the artwork
With 28 Millimètres, Women Are Heroes, Pont Louis-Philippe, created in 2009, JR documents one of the most iconic Parisian interventions from his internationally acclaimed Women Are Heroes project. Installed across the Pont Louis-Philippe bridge in Paris, the monumental eyes printed on the stone architecture create a powerful dialogue between urban space, public memory, and human presence. Captured at night, the photograph transforms the bridge into a living portrait suspended above the Seine, while the reflections of the city lights and moving boats reinforce the cinematic and immersive atmosphere of the composition. Through Women Are Heroes, JR sought to highlight the dignity, strength, and stories of women living in vulnerable or overlooked communities around the world. By bringing these faces into public space on a monumental scale, the artist transforms anonymous urban structures into spaces of visibility and collective reflection. This work perfectly embodies JR’s ability to merge photography, architecture, and social engagement into visually striking interventions that are immediately recognizable.
Expert opinion
This artwork belongs to Women Are Heroes, one of JR’s most important and historically significant projects. The series played a decisive role in establishing the artist’s international reputation and remains among the most sought-after bodies of work within his market. The Pont Louis-Philippe intervention is particularly emblematic, as it brought JR’s practice directly into the center of Paris, transforming a historic bridge into a monumental photographic installation. The night-time composition, combined with the reflections on the Seine and the architectural integration of the eyes, creates one of the most visually memorable images associated with the project. The use of the Marinoni lithographic process and BFK Rives paper also reinforces the collectible quality of the work, linking JR’s urban interventions to the tradition of fine art printmaking. Works from this period are highly appreciated for their rarity, historical significance, and strong visual identity.
