About the artwork
A muted grey-blue background dominates the upper portion of the composition, providing a stark contrast to the figurative elements below. The central focus is a partially submerged, light brown car, depicted at an angle that suggests it is sinking into a dark, earthy ground plane. Its front bumper, headlights, and grille are visible, along with a yellow license plate featuring three dots. A wire antenna extends from the car's roof, bending upwards into the empty sky. Standing on the hood of the car is a stylized figure with a plain white, featureless head marked by a large black 'X'. The figure wears a grey t-shirt, black trousers, and black shoes, and holds a pink inflatable duck ring around its waist. To the lower left, near the submerged rear of the car, two white dice are visible on the ground. The overall impression is one of a surreal, somewhat melancholic scene, rendered with a direct and simplified aesthetic.
Expert opinion
This work positions itself within the broader context of contemporary figurative art, drawing particular parallels with the visual language often associated with street art and urban contemporary movements. The use of a simplified, almost graphic figure with an obscured identity is a recurring motif in art that comments on anonymity, consumer culture, or existential themes within modern society. The market for works with this aesthetic has seen growth, particularly among younger collectors and those interested in art that bridges the gap between public art and gallery spaces. The artist's approach, combining accessible imagery with a subtle narrative, contributes to its appeal within this segment.
About the artist
Born in Morocco in 1995, MARA is an artist living and working in France. After studying visual communications, he decided to devote himself fully to his passion, drawing his knowledge and inspiration from observing the city, graffiti, torn posters and the works of street artists. Today, this urban influence is reflected in his creations, where brutalism and street art aesthetics merge with more traditional techniques. MARA's style is a complex blend of various artistic currents. His work is characterized by the use of a character with an X for a face. One of MARA's strengths lies in his ability to comment on contemporary social and political realities through his art. MARA has produced works in several other cities, including Paris, Meknes, Florence, Berlin, Rio de Janeiro and New York.
