About the artwork

Depicted with the artist's characteristic smoky contours and gray, this portrait of a smiling man provokes our gaze and plunges us into a dark space.

Expert opinion

Influenced by graffiti, digital animation and Japanese culture, this work reflects the wealth of artistic inspiration that NKSIN draws on in his practice.

About the artist

Born in 1994, NKSIN is a Japanese artist. His work is marked by the subject of social discrimination, particularly given the discrimination he experienced because of his multicultural origins. Painting portraits of icons who have marked their eras with his contemporary eye inspired by Japanese culture, he fuses nostalgia with rejection of the past and present. NKSIN draws inspiration from both graffiti and digital animation, using the Renaissance technique of sfumata (a superimposition of very thin layers of paint). Internationally recognized, his work is exhibited around the world, including at Maison Ozmen in Paris in 2022 and 2023, and at Albertz Benda Gallery in Los Angeles in 2023.

“If we didn't have mouths, the discrimination we suffer in this world might cease, and the rhetoric that comes out of our mouths is the source of discrimination. [...] If we didn't have mouths, there would be no discrimination in this world.”
