Tomás Sánchez

Tomás Sánchez (born in 1948) is a Cuban painter and printmaker known for his meticulously detailed and often mystical landscape paintings. A graduate of the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, Sánchez first gained recognition for his political and social commentary in the 1970s, but gradually shifted his focus to the natural world. His work is deeply influenced by his spiritual practice, particularly meditation and Vipassanā, which lends a serene and contemplative quality to his compositions. Sánchez’s career has been marked by numerous international exhibitions and awards, establishing him as one of the most significant contemporary Cuban artists. His works are held in prestigious collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, and the Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst in Aachen, Germany. He is particularly celebrated for his lush, verdant jungle scenes and his depictions of overflowing landfills, which serve as poignant metaphors for environmental concerns and the human condition.
